On February 1st, Amnesty International launched a major report which found that Israel is committing the crime against humanity of apartheid, as defined by international law. Amnesty is the third major human rights organization to issue a report coming to this conclusion in just over a year. The time to act is now. The report contains irrefutable evidence that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians meets the definition of apartheid under the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. With the launch of this report, Amnesty is the third major human rights organization in the span of just over one year to reach the same conclusion, following Human Rights Watch and B’Tselem. As such, it is imperative that the Canadian government act now to stop Israel’s crimes of apartheid, and to ensure that Palestinians are granted equal civil and human rights, just the same as Jewish Israelis. Amnesty’s report makes several recommendations to governments around the world, and in particular to those that enjoy close diplomatic relations with Israel, such as Canada. It states that they “must recognize that Israel is committing the crime of apartheid[...], and review any cooperation and activities with Israel to ensure that these do not contribute to maintaining the system of apartheid”, including ending trade in arms and banning products from Israel’s illegal settlements. It also notes that states may exercise universal jurisdiction over persons reasonably suspected of committing the crime of apartheid. I ask you to read Amnesty’s report, and to acknowledge publicly that Israel is committing the crime of apartheid. I also ask that Canada place meaningful diplomatic and economic sanctions on Israel until it ends its well-documented apartheid practices.
